Ahh..., "Creative Capitalism", "Altruistic Capitalism", "Philanthropic Capitalism", "Euphemism Capitalism" etc., etc. So why did Exxon/Mobil, have to request the Courts to freeze 19 billion dollars of Venzuelan assets? I won't even mention the modern practice of Global Labor Arbitrage. Capitalism is capitalism and unless controlled, becomes the Controller. Or is all of this simply euphemism to hide the dark underbelly of "Laissez Faire'?

Marx and Engels may be right on some points.

BTW, what does an Untouchalbe in India have need of a computer for in the first place? Aren't there enough sewers to keep him busy and enough malaria, dysentary and cholera to control the surplus population?

drugwarvictim, Welcome to the "Dark Side" no one knows who's who or on which side until the "great game" is over.

Judge Posner posted at 3:06 pm receiving 33 comments by 6:30 pm...this post hit some nerves! I got a kick out of his confession about unsuccessfully mediating Microsoft and the Justice Department concluding that Mr. Gates is humble (unpretentious) :-) ... did any of you read Judge Posner's book "Catastrophe" ... read that before you are too hard on him ... while Mr. Gates' motives are positive -- kind of consistent with the Streisand Foundation, the Clinton Foundation, the Bradgalina Foundation, Doctors without Borders, Oprah's work in Africa, and other groups working hard to lift people out of poverty, Judge Posner, to me makes sense, when he says that if there are no poor people and capitalism is operating world wide at full throttle ... left untreated the diseases of climate change, terrorism, etc. would be horrible...but maybe if capitalism was going at full throttle those diseases wouldn't be present ... all the people who would be engaged in terrorism etc. would be doing capitalistic jobs not terrorist jobs etc. Anyway, thanks for some more good thoughts J.P.

Mr Gates comments makes sense if you are running a monopoly. The monopolist would want to share some of the monopoly profits in markets in order to gain popular and political protection for the maintenance of their monopoly.

A firm in a highly competitive industry would need to a pay a rate of return to investors consistent with market rates of return. The company would not have the resources to spend funds so that the CEO's world view could be financed with corporate dollars.

If Mr Gates wants to spend his private money on projects that will improve the world, we should all say thank you. If he wants to take money out of the corporate till, well that money belongs to the stockholders.

"…I would only add that a greater demand for fossil fuels may actually turn out to be a good thing if it leads to greater incentives to develop alternative sources of energy…"

By this logic, if you are in debt up to your neck, then getting in debt up to your eyebrows may actually turn out to be a good thing if it leads to greater incentives to be frugal.

Jack you say, "Perhaps it would also be wise for him to up the Yahoo offer so as to consolidate more monopoly power before the Anti-Trust Division is resuscitated?"

Another reason might be to grab Yahoo before Google does...If Google was to snatch Yahoo first, that would basically be the nail in the coffin for Microsofts attempt at search engines and all the advertising revenue that comes along with it.

KAYO MARBILUS MYSPACE BLOGS myspace.com/kayomarbilus William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955)[2] is an American business magnate, philanthropist, author, and chairman[3] of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen. He is ranked consistently one of the world's wealthiest people[4] and the wealthiest overall as of 2009.[1] During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder with more than 8 percent of the common stock.[5] He has also authored or co-authored several books.
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Although he is admired by many, a number of industry insiders criticize his business tactics, which they consider anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts.[6][7] In the later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.
Bill Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January, 2000. He remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect. In June, 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer. Gates' last full-time day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.
